Unleashing Enterprise Week 2008 in the North East!

July 2nd, 2008 by julie

Yesterday we hosted an event to unleash ideas for Enterprise Week 2008 at Beamish Hall. The day saw lots of networking amongst teachers, business people and those involved in enterprise delivery.

Pamela Hargreaves, Head of Campaign, welcomed our guests before Chris Spavin gave a presentation on Global Entrepreneurship Week and many of our guests shared ideas they have about how they plan to give Enterprise Week’s events an international flavour. Durham Community Business College are interested in ethical fashion. St Michael’s School in Billingham will be handing over Enterprise Week 2008 to the students who will be arranging events with an ethical twist. Staindrop Business and Enterprise College will be investigating why China’s economy is booming. Students will be looking at products that are made in China and investigating why they are made there. The students plan to visit China and go into a joint venture with a school there.

Tori James gave an inspirational speech. She was the first ever Welsh female to climb Mount Everest and shared the highs and lows of her adventure.

Tori also talked about Make Your Mark Clubs for schools and colleges. The Make Your Mark Club is for young enterprising people who want to make ideas happen while they’re at school or at college. It’s easy to run your own Make Your Mark Club and you can use this site to swap ideas or share information about your club. Want more information? Contact Julie@makeyourmark.org.uk / 01642 451826

Guests were then treated to 2 workshops……

One was delivered by Emma Farrell. This was all about Web Magic! She showed us how to utilise wikis, blogs, virals and other digital marketing techniques. Would you like to take a look at our twitter feed?

One was delivered by Phil Tulba. He showed us the exciting world of social enterprise. He explained what a social enterprise is and gave examples. We watched the ‘Trailblazers’ DVD. Copies of the Trailblazer’s magazine can be downloaded at:

Phil informed our guests about the One Water Challenge. This year, One Water and Make Your Mark have teamed up to launch the One Water Challenge for schools in the UK. Teams of schoolchildren (aged 14-19) will be given bottles of One Water and just one month in which to sell as many bottles as possible, in as innovative a way as possible. They could get them signed by a celebrity, or turn the bottle label into a piece of artwork, or sell them at school or at their parent’s workplace. The idea is to use all of their creativity and enterprise skills to sell One Water. After repaying the original cost of the water, what they do with the profit is up to them. They can keep it, invest it in more water, or even pursue another idea. Schools will be encouraged to sign up in September and bottles of water will be delivered to students for Social Enterprise Day (Thursday November 20, 2008) during Enterprise Week and Global Enterpreneurship Week. More information available at: http://www.enterpriseweek.org.uk/getinvolved/onewater

Guests could also take part in ‘Talkaoke’ – known as the ‘doughnut’ of chat, is a mobile chat show which invites participants to sit down and air their views around the Talkaoke table, as well as North East Bond’s Launch Pad which isdesigned to encourage all kinds of people to set up in business or to create a social enterprise.

Keeping up with social media; a look at Twitter and Plurk

June 11th, 2008 by hbourne

According to tech experts a new microblogging service called Plurk may be the Twitter for teens. I’ve only just got my head around Twitter so to be honest I’m rather glad I’m too old for Plurk. We have a Make Your Mark Twitter feed which you can follow online or via your mobile to get the latest links to information from us or our partners, in a shorthand form. It’s a bit of an experiment but I like the fact it feeds into our Facebook page to keep that group updated.

What I think is even more interesting is how community groups and individuals might be using Twitter to tackle social issues. So, for example, I could see it being used to share hints and tips on mobility or coping with certain treatment programmes like chemotherapy, which I understand can be an isolating experience. We’re hoping to discover some of these examples as they emerge through the UK Catalyst Awards.

I’ll keep on Twittering but I think for me Plurk might be a step too far.

First Class Entrepreneur

May 8th, 2008 by Catherine

Who do you imagine when you think ‘entrepreneur’? Richard Branson or Alan Sugar? Fourteen-year-old Joel Drapper could be evidence that a new generation is brimming with entrepreneurial flair.

Joel has a talent for IT and a passion for websites. He has taken his interest and turned it into an enterprising opportunity. By starting the business 1stclasswebsites.com. Joel is planning to use his skill in creating websites to help small businesses and charities, giving them a professional-look presence online. Joel already has some satisfied customers and his fame as a local business man is growing:this week he made it into the local paper. Read the story here:
http://www.bridportnews.co.uk/news/localnews/display.var.2251446.0.it_boy_with_a_head_for_business.php

Joel and his family have already ‘made their mark’ through enterprise:

In December 2007 the family entered a team for the Make Your Mark Challenge, the UK’s largest simultaneous enterprise competition. In the toughest ever year of the contest, the Drapper Family came up with an enterprising solution to the Challenge to ‘make it pay in a globalocal way’ and triumphed as a winner in the South West Regional Final.

Following success in the Make Your Mark Challenge, the family joined the Make Your Mark Club, a network of enterprise clubs run by school and college students. Four children have been developing enterprising ventures and all are making their mark developing new skills and ideas.

Joel used the prize money from the Make Your Mark Challenge to develop his business idea for the website design company and next week he will launch 1stclasswebsite.com on his birthday. Joel has overcome many barriers, including having ADHD, but nothing has stopped him bringing his idea to life.

Joel is a living example of the ways in which young people can make their mark and create real opportunities for themselves. We wish him lots of luck with his venture - he’s a great example to us all!

Has the economic situation knocked confidence of start-ups?

May 7th, 2008 by hbourne

Microsoft have launched research today, which shows that over 80% of small business owners believe that the conditions for starting a business will worsen over the coming year. It also revealed that more than 40% would not encourage others thinking about setting up in business.  What was interesting was that financing projects was not of great concern so it seems that the issue is around confidence rather than money.

I went on some regional radio stations this morning to discuss these points alongside a spokesperson from Microsoft and was keen to point out the following:

  • There is a market out there for more than you might think and, whilst entrepreneurs should be careful not to enter a particularly declining market, there will always be a need for innovative products and services
  • You have to take risks to be an entrepreneur, no matter what the state of the economy is, so the trick is to manage these risks and take control of your own destiny
  • Start small, but aim high. As my friend from Microsoft rightly says it is now possible to set up in business with only a good idea and a laptop based in your bedroom. You don’t always need to chuck your job in and remortgage your house to turn a dream into reality. Who knows you could create the next Google or Facebook which both started in someone’s bedroom!

And bearing this all in mind if you are (hopefully) still keen to take the plunge make sure you get out there and talk about your idea with others. Find people who can help you because a strong support network can get you through the hardest of times.

Web entrepreneurs TNG!!

April 14th, 2008 by Emma

Making money from the web was the theme of today when some ambitious young people visited Make Your Mark towers to find out more about carving a lucrative career online.

The pupils from Knights Templar school did a spot of speed networking with a variety of people from online industries, including Andrew Walker (Thin Martian), Matthew Miles-Griffiths (games designer), Paul Miller (CEO of School of Everything), Ollie Barrett (entrepreneur and speed networking guru) and Make Your Mark’s very own Dr Dan McQuillan and Allan Okello.

Lloyd Davis from Social Media Cafe and Louise Brown from Channel 4 spoke to the group about new web technologies and the careers that can be forged online, and there were a series of entertaining discussions about working on the web, being a games designer and working at Channel 4.

A good day was had by all and hopefully we have inspired some future internet millionaires!

First Tuesday and Internet World seeking UK’s most promising Internet company

April 4th, 2008 by christer

The First Tuedsay Award

Professional networking group First Tuesday, in conjunction with leading web conference Internet World, have announced the First Tuesday Award. A distinguished panel of judges from companies such as the Financial Times and the London Business School will bestow the title of ‘UK’s Most Promising Internet Company’ to the most qualified candidate, at the Internet World conference in London on April 30th April, 2008.

Covering a broad spectrum of web-based UK businesses, the companies will be judged on their degree of innovation, growth rate and future potential. The winner will be awarded a lucrative business booster package including personal introductions to some of UK’s top VC and Angel investors, a professionally produced corporate video, access to meeting facilities across the UK and business plan coaching. The full package is valued at upwards of £10,000.

“London specifically, and the UK in general, are experiencing a resurgence in web-based entrepreneurial culture,” said First Tuesday Chief Executive Christer Holloman. “What largely disappeared after the dot-com bust of 2000 has reemerged, with a vibrant mix of young start-ups and experienced venture capitalists starting to make waves.”

Internet World event director James Drake-Brockman commented: “With the UK’s premier web companies and most promising entrepreneurs in attendance, Internet World provides the perfect forum for First Tuesday’s ‘Most Promising Internet Company’ award. First Tuesday’s formula of bringing together venture capital and entrepreneurship will add a valued dimension to the event.”

Companies that believe they should be shortlisted can nominate themselves free of charge on the First Tuesday website ( http://www.firsttuesday.org.uk/award ). The nomination process takes then less then 10 minutes. Members of the public are also encouraged to nominate companies they would like to see win, for a chance to collect a cash prize and tickets to the official after party at Paul Allen’s private members club, The Hospital in Covent Garden.

Entrepreneur has to go to Silicon Valley to see his dreams realised

March 27th, 2008 by hbourne

Check out the latest BBC online blog http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7315598.stm

from entrepreneur and Make Your Mark ambassador Kulveer - who has just sold his company which he runs with his cousin for ‘millions of dollars’.

His move to Sillicon Valley in the States has undoubtedly played a part and I wonder whether we can ever hope to reproduce this fostering environment for tech companies in the UK. It’s a point which Kulveer raises within a view point he wrote for us last year.
