Empty spaces should mean opportunity, not decline.
September 10th, 2009 by Alex_GoldupPicture the scene: tumbleweed blows across the ground, a door to a long-abandoned building swings mournfully on its hinges, packs of stray dogs roam (okay, you probably get the idea)…
Where is this deserted landscape – devoid of activity – to be found? In formerly-bustling hubs of enterprise and business according to a new report from the property consultancy Savills, which reveals that millions of square feet of perfectly good retail spaces up and down the country are sitting empty.
This glut of empty retail space is cause for regret. As the report mentions, empty space will have the effect of delaying recovery in affected areas.
It is however the case that empty space can mean not just decline, but – particularly for those with entrepreneurial ambitions-opportunity as well.
The great people of Hartlepool are currently proving this point with flair, passion, and creativity. As part of Make Your Mark’s very own Disuse to Good Use campaign, self-employed people – from artist and musicians to chefs and football coaches – are turning underused retail spaces into a patchwork of vibrant enterprises.
Nobody likes to see empty retail space: but , with passion, creativity, and old-fashioned hard work, they can be turned from an eyesore into an opportunity to kickstart entrepreneurial ambitions.
