When business has to do more with less

May 1st, 2009 by emma_kate

Make Your Mark Ambassador Ashley Davison has sent us his report on the Institute of Directors Annual Convention, held on Wednesday.

2009’s Annual IOD Convention was a gathering of more than 2500 of UK’s top business leaders. Located at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall; from the exterior everything appeared to portray a feeling of business as usual, however the agenda was set very much by the current recession. Tough times featured as a strong theme running through every speaker’s presentation. Although perversely the mood and tone across the board was one of hope, optimism and even great excitement.

There were a rich range of interesting opinions, anecdotes and case studies from both the public and private sector which gave a real sense of the full economic picture in the UK at the moment. Every speaker put forward an incredibly positive and encouraging message for all aspiring entrepreneurs.

“If I had the power, I’d take the word ‘failure’ out of the dictionary and replace it with ‘feedback’” – Dragons Den investor and Make Your Mark Chair Peter Jones

Tim Smit CBE, Co-Founder of the hugely successful Eden Project, stressed “What a wonderful time it is to be alive.” He was an especially passionate advocate for getting rid of all negative attitudes and to live without regrets. He said happiness lay in actually undertaking and seeing through the things you love. Doug Richards, original Dragon from Dragons’ Den also stated that “now is a fantastic time to be an entrepreneur”. Dell Computers founder Michael S. Dell even gave a specific nugget of inspiring advice: “Find a market that’s rapidly expanding and bring a break through product to it. Something that will deliver value and savings.”

This positive attitude coming from such incredible business minds was wonderfully inspiring and left myself feeling excited about just what can be achieved during a recession, precisely because business is forced to innovate and do more with less. It seems as long as the public sector does not look to regulate too heavily and stifle efforts by the private sector the consensus truly was that enterprise will push the UK out of this recession.
