It’s somewhat disappointing that Gordon refers to business and social enterprise as if these were distinct entities. We for example, work as a profit-for-purpose business.
We’ve been operating in the UK since 2004, but our history is one of advocacy in the US for digital and economic inclusion, following a seminal paper delivered to the White House in Sept 1996.
We advocate for localised people-centred economic development on a global basis and in 1999 were able to leverage a development project and microfinance bank in Siberia.
Since setting up in the UK we’ve delivered the ‘Marshall Plan’ for Ukraine as a blueprint for microeconomic development, and by targeting the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, influential in the creation of the East Europe Foundation.

In a country facing a great number of social problems, not least the explosion of HIV infection, we would like to see our own country invest in the way that the US has responded, by supporting our social enterprise advocacy.

Hi Jeff, I actually interpreted the speech differently and was pleasantly surprised and even somewhat inspired by the speech (I think rather that the glass was half full than half empty). I heard Mr Brown highlighting that the principals of social action and enterprise are linked, and that such businesses that do in fact link the two, in the global economy, will give rise to great future opportunities and should therefore be encouraged and supported. I think this is a great basis on which to form government policies for business, and look forward to an influx in funding and investment in such enterprises that are in line with this stance (or is that just a little optimistic?) .
